If you’re a time-poor business owner, it can feel like you’re stuck in a constant catch-22 situation. You need to free up your time, and the best way to do that is to outsource. But you can’t even think about outsourcing, as you don’t have the time to outsource to someone, let alone work out what to outsource!

However, if you want to free up your time and give your business the best opportunity to grow further, you need to find a way out of the catch-22. And the only way to do that is to get a little tough on yourself.

Time is your most precious resource

Because time is your most precious resource. If you’re spending it doing tasks that aren’t worthy of that time, you’re doing yourself and your business a disservice. As part of getting organised and getting stuff done as a business owner, you have to make the best use of your available resources. Your time is such a resource. It’s limited and valuable – so you need to start treating it that way. Take a moment to look through your calendar and to-do list. Are you making the most of your precious time?

The tasks you do should be the ones you want to do

By doing all the tasks you can, you’re simply doing too much and valuing yourself too little. You are also a valuable resource, so you need to maximise your own potential. That means doing the tasks you want to do and doing the tasks that work to your zone of genius. Know what skills you bring to the table and get good at using and protecting them. Think for a moment about the tasks you do in your average week. Are they within your zone of genius, or are they tasks that someone else can realistically do for you?

How do you want your week to look?

Know how you want your week to look. In an ideal week, what would your diary look like? What tasks would you be pleased to see in your planner? What would you be spending your time doing? You can start to implement this ideal scenario by looking at how to tame your to-do list. Start imagining how it will feel to get other tasks off your list and outsourced to someone else. Think about how your working life will change, what jobs you’ll do more of and what you’ll do less of. How many hours would you want to work?

It’s your business, so run it your way

Because this isn’t just about the tasks you do, it’s about the lifestyle you want as well. You’re the CEO of your own business, and you can run it your way – and I’m pretty sure you started your business to have a particular lifestyle. Did you want to spend more time with your family? Maybe you want to have regular lunch dates with the girls or spa weekends away? What do you need to change? What tasks do you need to outsource? How does your week need to be to make that happen?

If you’re a time-poor business owner, you need to take the time to outsource

Starting and running a business isn’t easy. It takes a lot of time and dedication. Building a team of your own (or working with an outsource team) will help free up your time and enable you to have the lifestyle you want. But it starts with you clearing some space and taking time in your calendar to look into outsourcing. It takes a little dedication time to find the right outsourcer or team for your business. And it takes patience to go through the tasks you already do and decide what exactly you can outsource.

But it’s something that needs to be done. You need to make the time to outsource; otherwise, it will never happen, and things will stay the same. And if you’re OK with that, great! But if you’re serious about having more time to do the things you want to do, you need to take that first step – and find the time to outsource.
